President Barzani Receives the British Ambassador to Iraq



On Monday, February 2, President Masoud Barzani received Mr. Irfan Sadiq, British Ambassador to Iraq, in Pirmam. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Andrew Beasley, British Consul General in Erbil.

The discussions focused on the latest political developments in Iraq, efforts to form a new government, and the issue of appointing the President of the Republic. President Barzani stated that the position of President of Iraq is the constitutional entitlement of the Kurds and that an appropriate and agreed-upon mechanism should be established for the nomination and election of the presidential candidate, to serve as a stable foundation for the political process in Iraq following each election. Regarding the position of Prime Minister, President Barzani noted that this post is the entitlement of the Shiite political forces and that the matter should be decided among them.

The meeting also addressed the situation in Syria, the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the peace process in Turkey, and broader regional developments.
